곧 .... 할 것이다.

It won't be long before she starts walking.

(잠시 후 그녀는 걷기 시작할 것이다.)

어구: It won't be long｢(시간이)오래 걸리지 않을 것이다)

cf. Don't be long.(빨리 돌아와.)

cf. It will be long before we know the truth.

(진상을 알게 되기까지는 오래 걸릴 것이다.)

해설: <It won't be long before...> =<soon....>으로 생각한다.

It will not long before his son support his family.

→The day will come soon when his son will support his family.

(머지 않아 그의 아들이 가족을 돌보게 될 것이다.)

It won't be long before it begins to rain.

(곧 비가 내릴 것이다)

It won't be long before she shows up.

(곧 그녀가 나타날 것이다.)

It won't be long before he quits smoking.

(머지않아(곧) 그는 금연할 것이다.)

cf) It was not long before we met by chance again.

어구: what와의 성구:

what for｢무엇에｣

해설: What did you give her?의 what을 강조한 구문.

when did you see her last time?

(요전에 그녀를 만난 것이 어디었던가?)따위의 표현.

Where was it that you saw her last time?

 

 

It seems that....:

....인 듯하다; ...인 모양이다.

It seems that he has much to do with the scandal.

(그는 그 스캔달(부정사건)과 크게 관련되어 있는 듯하다.)

어구: have much to do with--｢--와 크게 관련되어 있다.｣

cf. have something to do with; have ...to do with

해설: it는 that이하를 받는 가주어.

(구문연구 6)과 같이 단정, 단언을 피하는 표현.

He를 주어로 하여 고쳐쓸 수도 있다.

→ He seems to have much to do with the scandal.

that...이하가 과거시제이면,

He seems to have had much to do with the scandal.

｢그는 스캔달과 관계가 있었던 것 같다｣로 ｢완료 부정사｣를 쓴다.

｢완료 부정사의 시제는 주문의 시제 (seem) 보다 앞선다.

She seems to have been pretty when young.

(그녀는 젊었을 때 아름다웠던 것 같다.)

→ It seems that she was (or has been) pretty when young.

 

 

It happened that..... : 간혹 ....한다.

It happened that I met her in the park.

(간혹 그녀를 공원에서 만났다.)

어구: in the park의 ‘in'은 ｢내부의 위치｣를 뜻한다.

in the room(class) etc.

해설: It happened one day that a stray dog came to him.

(어느 날 한 마리의 길을 잃은 개가 그에게 다가왔다.)

<It so happened that...>와 같이 so가 들어가는 경우도 있다.

It so happened one morning that she came to the office on a bicycle.

(어느 날 아침 그녀는 회사에 자전거를 타고 왔다.)

-→ She happened to come to the office on a bicycle.

예문을 단문으로 고치면 다음과 같다.

-→ I happened to meet her in the park.

It happened that a friend of mine went my way and he kindly gave me a lift.

(내 친구 중의 한 사람이 나와 같은 방향으로 가게 되었는데, 그는 친절하게도 나를 차에 태워 주었다.)

cf. He happened to out when I called.

(내가 찾아가 보니 그는 마침 외출 중이었다.)

I happened on(upon) the very thing I wanted.

(내가 원하고 있었던 바로 그것이 우연히 발견되었다.)
